Year 6

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of term one, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our students for the hard work and effort they have shown so far. We are happy to say that the year 6 students have settled well into their classrooms and are happy to be back with their friends for their final year of primary school.

While the term has been a busy one, our students have been working hard to grasp a number of concepts in different subject areas. The English focus has been letter writing and here students have had the opportunity to explore this genre by writing formal letters to family and friends and informal letters to our premier Daniel Andrews in regard to last year’s lockdown. In maths, students had the opportunity to explore number patterns, addition and subtraction, shapes and fractions.

In integrated studies students explored Australian history. This includes understanding major events that have occurred in Australia’s past and the important figures who have played a big role in Australia’s steps to Federation. They have examined the democratic system that Australia adopted and is still using today. During this time, we also investigated what occurred after Federation and the mistreatment of the Aboriginal people and immigrants who migrated to Australia after the two world wars.

During our ICT classes, students have been practicing their touch-typing skills on Typing Club and have shown great independence with their use of the online program Prezi. They have also shown a thorough understanding on how to collect data using excel spread sheets and converting this information into graphs.

This term our year 6 students started their Buddy Program where they have been partnered up with our Foundation students to guide them through their first year of primary school. So far it’s been amazing to see how well our year 6 students have stepped-up into this role and we look forward to the year ahead.

We hope you all have a safe holiday break, and we are looking forward to another busy and engaging term.

Kindest Regards,
Mr Kocdemir and Mrs Nilsen
